I use Excel on a PC at work, and use the Alt "underlined letter in Menu"
shortcut method for nearly everything. Is this feature available on the Mac
version of Excel 2004? My productivity on the Mac version is poor compared
to PC version because of this.
Since MacXL's keyboard shortcuts are nearly completely customizable
(Tools/Customize/Keyboard), your productivity could be much higher on
the Mac - i.e., not having to type all those keys to drill down to
submenus, or having to remember which menus the command is on (that's
especially useful for me, since I get rid of the built-in menus and
create my own).
As for what you're after, not really, but there's a way to make the
system menus work similarly:
While it won't work exactly like Windows Alt key shortcuts, in OSX,
the way to accomplish what you're after is to turn on Full Keyboard
Access. In Panther, turn it on in the Keyboard Shortcuts pane of the
Keyboard & Mouse Preference Pane in the System Preferences. You can
view the shortcuts on that pane, and change them if you prefer. The
mechanism is less convenient than the XL98 method, but it will work.
