Keyboard shortcuts not working properly in Word 2007

For some reason or other my keyboard shortcuts aren't working properly. For
example, ctrl-e results in italics. There are similar results or non-results
with many others, though not all (ctrl-i still results in italics). Is there
any easy way to return these to their normal state?

Tools | Customize | Keyboard. Track down the incorrect key assignments and
unassign them.

For Word 2007, you might want to try Button > Word Options > Customize then
click the Keyboard shortcuts customize button. You can either go through
them all, or reset the whole bunch to the default. You will be warned that
any keyboard shortcuts you have assigned to macros or styles will be lost,
but if that isn't an issue for you, it may be the most expedient way to
recover your shortcuts.

I would be happy to reset them all to the default. However, when I open that
window the reset button is grayed out, as are the other buttons. I don't want
to arbitrailily assaign a command in order for the reset button to activate.
But is that what I would have to do?

If the Reset button is greyed out, it suggests that you have never made any
custom keyboard assignments which makes your problem seem even weirder!

To help with diagnosing this, please start Word in Safe Mode and test again.
From Start | Run, type in

winword /a

and press ENTER. Now open a document and try testing the Ctrl+i and Ctrl+e
again to see if they still both toggle italics.
