Keyboard stops responding in Word 2002 SP3

From time to time, the keyboard stops responding in Word 2002 SP3. At that
point, I can only type a character if I save the document after EACH
character entered. The mouse continues to work normally. This problem does
not occur if I start winword in safe mode.

How can I fix this?
