keyboard viewer only in english

When using word 2004 for mac, the onscreen keyboard viewer refuses to
switch languages. This is most certainly a Word issue as switching to
text edit, a web browser, or any other application shows an updated
keyboard viewer with the correct language.

does anyone know if this is a common issue, and how to fix it?

Not just English. US English!
It *is* a common issue.
I know of no fix.

Note that the keyboard stays in the chosen language, it is only the
viewer that goes neo-colonialist imperialist aggressor on you.
The work around is to click on the desktop to get your viewer in the
right language, then back to Word, then type the real key suggested by
the viewer.

It is a plot by the Department of Homeland Security to collect all ten
of your fingerprints without you flying through a US airport.

OK, I'm only joking. It is nothing more than evidence of the shoddy
quality of the current Microsoft Office.

One hopes, as usual, that the new one will fix more bugs than it
creates. It becomes tiring listening to the misanthropes who assert it
is a conscious business decision to do the opposite.

thanks,
there is one other thing though. The version I am using was a student-
teacher version.
On a different computer I have the full professional version
installed, and there doesn't seem to be any issue with the keyboard
viewer. Also, the other computer is a pre-intel imac, while the
problem is on a new intel imac. Do you think the version of word is
making a difference, or the type of computer?

thanks

Aha! A very good question. I have one of each Mac here. The US keyboard
problem only appears on the Intel Mac.

Others who know, assert there is no difference between the standard and
student and teacher versions other than the spectacularly different
value for money.

I hereby apologise for my smartarse{1] remark about Microsoft software
quality. It would appear to be a Rosetta problem of Apple's.

1. Would that be Smartass in US English?

thanks for checking that out.
I'm not sure what rosetta is.
The keyboard does work properly in textedit and firefox.
was office 2004 for mac pre-intel? I don't remember.
does knowing that it's an intel issue help towards finding a solution?
Will office for mac have a new version soon?
sorry about the questions. I'm just very frustrated since a lot of my
work involves word processing in alternate languages. languages like
japnese are ok since the input is phonetic, but others like hebrew
need the keyboard (or for me to memorize the keys). there are also
some strange issue with the right to left input for hebrew which i
don't even want to think about

Naw - you're right the first time - I experiece the same behavior on my G5.

However, If you select the desired language a *second* time it will usually
hold. Some have also reported that if Keyboard Viewer is launched *before*
Word that the frustrating anomaly doesn't occur.

unfortunately, no matter how many times I switch languages, the viewer
won't change. occasionally there is a flicker of change, but it goes
right back to US english. Even when the viewer is launched first, i
still have the problem

My Mac Pro always show English (US) viewer only when Word has focus.
My PB 12" always respects the keyboard language in the viewer, even in
Word.

Funny eh?

even more annoying is that when I type what i want in textedit since
it's easy with a working viewer, and pasted it into word, it's
backwards for hebrew and arabic because word doesn't seem to support
right to left languages on a mac. In textedit the right to left
features are fine automatically. this is getting too crazy. maybe I
should just get iWork

Heh! Forget about Word for a while if you want right to left.
There is a big fat trial download for Pages at Apple somewhere.
I forget where.
I just set my copy to Hebrew.
It does some bizarre things with the insertion point and the arrow
keys, so unless there is some vast cultural chasm I don't understand,
you might download the trial before committing to it.
Already.

I think iWork does not support RTL script, but I might be wrong.

It does, for *very* small values of "support" it would seem.
It is better than Word, but that is faint praise indeed.

Rosetta is the software emulator that allows Motorola PowerPC code to run in
an Intel Pentium (which is what the Mac is now using, although we don't call
it that anymore...)

The x86 processor and the PPC processor have instructions and data
represented precisely the opposite to each other. Rosetta has to flip each
computer "word" end-for-end.

Yes, Office 2004 was designed for the PowerPC. Much of it was actually
designed for OS 9.

Office 2008 (when it arrives...) is the first one to be designed around the
Intel processor. It will be offered as a universal binary (i.e. There are
two versions in the package, one to run natively on each processor).

That should result in a dramatic speed improvement on the Intel. We hope...

Cheers
