Keystroke combination for foreign letters

Version: 2008
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)

After installing MSOffice into my new iMac I am disappointed that the old keystroke commands for foreign letters and symbols don't seem to be available any more (Word98)
I could highlight the whole document go to "find and replace" type in the letter combination I used for a particular character as a substitute then go to "replace all" and enter the letter combination that was available for the character. (for example french é Alt 0233 or German Alt 0246 ö etc) It replaced all the characters in the whole document.
I MISS IT DREADFULLY! Grateful for any help. Swanhild

Sorry this doesn't post well, but I'm hopeful that you can decipher it :)
It's copied from Word 2004 Help on International Characters & for some
reason is sadly missing from Help in 2008;

Insert an international character by using a shortcut key
To produce Press
à, è, ì, ò, ù
À, È, Ì, Ò, Ù OPTION+` (ACCENT GRAVE), the letter
á, é, í, ó
Ã, É, Ã, Ó, Ú OPTION+e, the letter
â, ê, î, ô, û
Â, Ê, Î, Ô, Û OPTION+i, the letter
ã, ñ, õ
Ã, Ñ, Õ OPTION+n, the letter
ä, ë, ï, ö, ü, ÿ
Ä, Ë, Ã, Ö, Ãœ, Ÿ OPTION+u, the letter
Ã¥, Ã… OPTION+a or OPTION+SHIFT+a
æ, Æ OPTION+' (single quotation mark) or
OPTION+SHIFT+' (single quotation mark)
Å“, Å’ OPTION+q or OPTION+SHIFT+q
ç, Ç OPTION+c or OPTION+SHIFT+c
ø, Ø OPTION+o or OPTION+SHIFT+o
¿ OPTION+SHIFT+?
¡ OPTION+1
ß OPTION+s

I don't ever recall being able to use the method you referred to on a Mac —
Alt+[NumericKeypad] is a Windows method. Even so, I've only ever used it
WinWord for characters that weren't available by way of other strokes
[Alt=0182 = ¶, for example]. I've always used the assigned strokes such as
Control+Shift+Colon for ö, Control+` for è, etc.

You might also be interested in taking a look at the OS X Character Map as
well as assigning your own keystrokes plus the use of the AutoText &
AutoCorrect features.

BTW: There's no need to Select ("highlight") All in order to use Find &
Replace. Selecting content is beneficial if you want to limit the activity
to that passage only :) And if you haven't already discovered it don't
neglect to click the triangle button left of the others to expand the F&R
dialog & explore the additional capabilities it provides based on Formatting
& Special [non-printing] characters.
