label grid not appearing

I am using the "envelopes and labels" feature to make labels. When I choose
the label type I want and click "new document" the label grid does not show
on the page. Why would this happen and how can it be fixed?

Table | Show Gridlines.

Word 2003 or older: Table - Show grid
Word 2007: On the View tab, in the Show/Hide group, select the Gridlines
check box.
