labelling tables

P

pats

Hi there! I forgot how I managed to do this (I know that
it's possible since I've used it in previous documents).
I have a report with some tables in it. To prevent me from
making errors when changing text/tables around I want to
have them automatically numbered.
I've used insert field (AUTONUM) but unfortunately instead
of Table 1:
I get Table 1.:
I cannot remove the extra .
Can anyone help me?
Also I was previously able to add an extra button to my
personal toolbar which said table heading, in this way
pushing this button would insert auto text/ autonumbered
header. Can anyone tell me how I did that? *big grin*
Many Thanks

Hi pats

You probably need to do 4 things.

1. Insert the label by doing Insert > Caption (or Insert > Reference >
Caption if you have Word 2002 or 2003). Choose the "Table" label. This
will insert a field that automatically numbers your tables.

2. Having inserted the caption, you'll see that it is in caption style.
So you may need to modify the caption style to get the text or layout
you want (eg bigger font, or less space before or after the paragraph).

3. Create an AutoText to insert a caption easily. Select the caption you
have created, do Alt-F3 and give your AutoText a name (eg TableHeading).

4. To create the toolbar button, Tools > Customize. Click Keyboard. In
the Categories box, choose AutoText. In the AutoText box, find your
AutoText and drag it to a toolbar. Click Close.

By default, your AutoText and the button on the toolbar are saved in
normal.dot. When you exit Word, if you're asked whether you want to save
normal.dot, say Yes.

Hope this helps.
