Labels w/Vertical Text Direction?

Hi,

I'm probably missing the obvious here...

I am trying to use Word's label template (for Avery label #8167)
however I cannot figure out how to make it print text vertically--so
the letters are one below the previous letter rather than left-to-
right. I should think this would be simple but I can't seem to manage.
Any suggestions? Do I need a different add-on? Or even a special label
program?

Thanks,
David

You can highlight the text you want to change and then:

Format, Text Direction

Select how you want the text to be: Top to bottom or Bottom to top!!

The above works in Office 2003; I don't have Office 2007 on this
machine I am currently working on.

Hope this helps.

Hm,

Well I had tried that previously and found that all that does is
rotate the entire paragraph 90 degrees. What I'm looking for is to
rotate the individual letters so that it will transform this:

Sample
Text

Into this:

S T
a e
m x
p t
l
e

I don't think the Text Direction option will do this--or am I
mistaken?

Thanks,
David

It depends... For actual rotation, I would think you would need to tilt your
head to the right or left to read it. If that's the case, then the Text
Direction tool does what you want. Click in the cell you want rotated, and
click the Text Direction tool in the Table Tools - Layout ribbon (Alignment
section... which is the 2nd ribbon section from the right). Depending on how
you want the text rotated, you might need to click the tool twice -- once
rotates 90º clockwise, and twice flips the text 180º, and three times makes
the text horizontal again.

If you still want the letters to be upright, i.e., where you don't need to
title your head to read the actual letters, then this won't do it. You'd
need to do something else, and it'd be more work, and the method would
depend on how you want the "wrapping" done. It would have to be manually
done, such as by making the column so narrow that the tax is forced into a
vertical array, then creating additional columns (hiding the between-cell
border most likely) to accommodate the "wrapped" text. Hence, in your
example, Sample would be in narrow column 1, and Text would be in narrow
column 2, and the border between those two cells would be turned off.

The best way to handle this issue is to recreate your template in
landscape format rather than portrait. By recreating your template in
landscape format you can then use the vertical text tool in Word and I
think it may work for your purposes.

In the Labels and Envelopes section you will need to setup a custom
template. You will need to reverse the label specifications and select
landscape rather than portrait for page size.

There is a similar item to the Avery 5167 at OnlineLabels.com. It is
item OL25WX. You can check out the dimensions of the label at the link
below.
