LAN and Modem connection

I am a little confused here. What I need is to operate my portable on LAN
and via modem. As I was setting up Dial-up properties I noticed that the
System opened the Mail using LAN settings. The incoming Mail works all right
(the SMTP was not correct therefore I could not send). Now I do not know
which would be the most reasonable way to set up my PC? Use LAN settings
only, but then I need to change the SMTP, or have both LAN and Dial-up
settings. This would be acceptable also although it creates error messages
when the modem is not connected. Any ideas?
