Language changing when returning from reviewrs

Hi --

I'm using Word2003.

I have this odd situation going on with one of my styles....

I am working on an application guide; I have a paragraph style defined
called "code_indented_small." There is nothing particularly interesting
about this style -- it's just a courier 8.5 pt with some spacing defined
before and after. When I reveal formatting the Language is US -- which is
what I assumed to would be (I've double-checked all the places where I can
set the default language).

However, I've had the following happen when it returns from reviewers and
track changes is on: In blocks of text that have this style applied, there
may be 3 or 4 lines that come back with "Formatted: German" applied. It's
not applied to all the text that has that paragraph style -- just a few
lines. Or it may come back from another reviewer with "Formatted:
Netherlands" applied to different lines, etc.

I'm perplexed about this one. Why is this happening? I **think** it has
even happened when I have protected the formatting.

Thanks,
Rita

Hi, Margaret --

I your response with my original question noted .... but I don't see your
answer.

Hi Rita

This is probably being caused by Word's autodetection of language - if the
content is code it is probably sufficiently different from ordinary language
to fire off the autodetect (but the detection is a PITA anyway - turned a
company addresses into French in one of my docs, yet doesn't spot genuine
foreign words.)

Doesn't surprise me that it doesn't respect formatting protection - it
doesn't respect reapplication of styles either.

You'll need to try to get your reviewers to turn off language autodetection
(Tools > Language > Set Language) on their machines. I'm not sure if setting
the style to 'No proofing' will help at all - I suspect not - or you could
resort to applying a language setting to the whole document as direct
formatting (the Help says this will be respected within whole sentences -
except when the text is edited <sigh>.)

Hi, Margaret --

Thanks for the info. Yes -- the code is dramatically different from
ordinary langauge. I didn't even think about that kicking off autodetection.

Thanks again,
Rita
