Language command dissapeared

Stefan Robert

Hello,

I recently noticed a missing command in word 2004 for MacOS X. The
Language command that was found in the Tools menu has disapeared ?!?!

Does someone know how to bring it back? (or access it?)

I recently noticed a missing command in word 2004 for MacOS X. The
Ok, I trashed my preferences as per this web page:

http://word.mvps.org/MacWordNew/DamagedPrefs.htm

and it solved my problem.

Sorry, for future reference, I would have said:

Make sure you didn't accidentally turn on "Word 5.1 Menus". Look under View
to see if there's a check next to that option. If that isn't the problem:

If you go to Tools | Customize Toolbars/Menus, select the Menu Bar, and
click Reset, it should set all your main menus and built-in toolbars back to
the default.

If you have customized your menus or toolbars, you may want to explore the
Tools | Customize, Commands dialog, and drag the commands you are missing
back to the toolbars/menus yourself, rather than wipe out your
customizations by clicking Reset.

Since trashing prefs isn't supposed to affect your menus, I suspect it was
the 5.1 Menus problem--guess there's a preference for that hidden somewhere?
How aggravating.

Actually, menu and toolbar settings can be affected by preferences. Word 5.1
menus is often the reason users think they have lost menu items. That can be
toggled by Conrol+5. Sometimes, users actually take a menu item out of the
menu and add it to a toolbar (by accident). Again trashing the prefs will
fix this, as will resetting the toolbars, as will finding the language item
in the command well (customize) and dragging it back to the menu from whence
it disappeared!

YES, and one of the things now on my complaint list is that since the Word
5.1 setting is stored in the prefs file, WHY isn't there an option in the
prefs dialog for it!

But I just tried this. Trashing the prefs did *not* reset the changes that
I have made to the Tools menu.

I thought all changes to the default toolbars (including the menubar) were
stored in the Normal template. The 5.1 menus setting seems to me to be the
only exception to this. But that's in my experience.

Actually, you are of course right. I guess I was a little unclear (in fact
in retrospect - inaccurate all round). All toolbar items, that is
customizations, added/removed items are stored in the Normal template.
Deleting normal will reset them to their default state. Toolbar position and
default set (i.e.which toolbars appear when you launch) are stored in the
prefs. Word 5.1. toolbars falls under this as technically, it is not a
preference to have them turned on, but a choice of what toolbars you have
up. It is a peculiarity of Word 5.1 toolbars that the menus get affected
too. Hope this clears up vagueness in the last post, thanks for calling me
on it :)

Incidentally, this is a perfect forum for people to give me their opinion on
Word 5.1 toolbars - who uses them, who hates them, who loves them, who loved
Word 5.1 (I did!)

Thanks, Rob.

default set (i.e.which toolbars appear when you launch) are stored in the
prefs.
Ah...I had never even thought about what controlled that.
