language disappeared from menu

The "language" command is gone from the Word Tools menu, so I have no
control of language for spell checking. I have the English version of
Office 2004, and I write in French and English.

I have tried to reinstall stuff, but it still does not appear.

How can I get the "language" command to appear in the menu?

First. Make sure you have not swapped to Word 5 menus by accidentally
hitting ctrl-5 (Hit it again then see if you have got "Language.."
back)
If no. Hit it one more time to get Word 2004 menus back. You can tell
if you are still in Word 5.1 menus by looking for "Word 5.1 Menus" in
the view menu.
Then
Hop into Tools » Customize » Customize Toolbars/Menus. Select the
toolbars tab and hit reset.

Some as yet unidentified magic causes menu items to go walkies.
Reset puts it back to the way it was when the world was new and all.

Hi Elliott:

Some as yet unidentified magic causes menu items to go walkies.
Reset puts it back to the way it was when the world was new and all.

Usually: Command + Option + -

If you inadvertently hit that key combination, you place Word into "Delete
menu item" mode. The next menu item you choose is permanently deleted :)

It's documented (sort of...) in the Help topic "Remove a document from the
Work menu"

Cheers

Thanks. That's good to know. I'm almost certain that would explain my
own fumble-fingered loss of menu items. That keystroke combo looks like
a non-breaking hyphen at first sight. I'd never think of Work menu as
the reason, because I have not yet found a use for it. I'm off to
disable that shortcut on my machine.

Oops, I DID have Word 5 menus on, but I thought that was just another
menu bar...

thanks.
