Language Setting

Donna

My document is using French to spell check, autocorrect, etc. I don't want
to use French, just English U.S. When I type some text, then a colon or
question mark, word automatically inserts a Control, Shift, space before the
punctuation. When I spell check, it's in French and although I change it to
English, it reverts back to French and thinks common words like "the" are
typos.

I have tried the Start, All Programs, Microsoft Office, Microsoft Tools,
Language settings route, but this doesn't help. Is there a way to "unclick"
directly in the file I'm working in to eliminate everything but English U.S.?

You need to set up the default languages correctly. Which version of Word
and Windows are you using?

I have never seen these version numbers used, but I do see that the System
Properties in Windows 2000 SP4 (which I'm using) show 5.00.2195. If Windows
2000 is 5.00, it sounds as if XP is not much of a step up!

You need to go to the Control Panel, Regional Settings and the Keyboard
settings and make sure that everything is set to the correct language.

Then from Start, Office, Office Tools, select the Office 2003 Language Tool
and check that your language is set as DEFAULT and at the same time, you can
add/remove any that you don't use.

Open Word and under Tools Language, Set Language, check that your language
is checked as default and that Automatically Detect Language is unchecked.
Press DEFAULT. Close Word and you should be prompted to save changes to the
global template.

Other documents or templates that have been accidentally switched tot he
wrong language may need to be individually changed. To do this, open the
document or template, SelectAll (Ctrl+A) and then go to Tools, Language, Set
Language and repeat as above pressing Default button and answering YES to
the prompt.
