Version: 2004
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
Processor: Intel

The date formats available to me in the format cells menu are only French, ie jj mmmm aa, etc.

I purchased and installed an English version of Office 2004 in England (standard edition). I use a Macbook pro purchased Feb 2009.

I used to live in France but the computer, OS and Office were purchased in UK, although the files have been used on a iMac (ppc) that we had in France, but that too is on an english OS/Office, although strangely on occasions Safari on that machine jumps to French, menus and all.

Word works fine in English. (If I open a new document and choose insert date from the menu, all the options are in english)

What can have happened and how can I get Excel to give me dates in English.

Excel takes its date format from the system preferences. Quit Excel, and
make sure these are set correctly. Also make sure you have the latest
updates for both Office and the OS.

Everything is updated.
I have even deleted the excel preferences files and reloaded but this did not cure the problem.

What did work however, was to open a new user account and just double click the file. It opened with no language problem.

I would prefer not to have to change users to work on excel however.

I have found the solution.

Close Excel. In Word choose Tools/Language and select the language you want for the whole of the office suite. Click the box for default.

Open Excel. The dates appear in your chosen language.
