I curious about using a "pen-like-stylus" has anyone tried it or heard how
they work with OneNote?

I wish to take notes in class with a pen rather than typing, but I rather
not buy a tablet PC. Any suggestions?

I've seen a few for about $100

thanks,
Michael

You won't get the digital ink capabilities from OneNote (though your pen may
provide some of that for you). If you're o.k. with your written notes being
presented in OneNote as images then that will work, but I think ultimately
you'll prefer the results you get by typing (or using a Tablet PC).

Why don't you want to type? Most people type faster than they write (right
Chris? <grin>) I think.

People type faster than they think, too, Ben. Typing is okay, and
generally faster if you're doing sentences, however, note-taking is
generally thoughts and outlines of referenced material for later review. An
external device, like you have pointed out, doesn't work well with OneNote
except on a Tablet PC where the advantage of being able to search your own
Ink notes comes into play - and recording an interview or lecture in
conjunction with the notes.

Ben--You're right about typing. The typewriter was invented long ago because
telegraph clerks could not keep up legibly in handwriting.
The tablet PC is step backward in my opinion, unless you really need
freehand drawing and markup. Entering text in handwriting is something that
is OK for those who can't (or won't) type. Handwriting is far slower, often
illegible, and requires and extra layer in OneNote for text recogniton. I
can "type" an outline in OneNote faster than anybody can write one. Outlines
are incredibly simple if you can fine the "tab" key, as I'm sure you are
well aware.
I've looked at tablet PCs and found them more expensive (not a huge issue)
but MUCH heavier than a comparable keyboard-only laptop. I also don't trust
that swivel connection. I've had laptops for years, and had one fail at the
hinge, which is pretty common (the electrical connection failed, not the
mechanical hinge). Now if somebody invented a tablet PC that could scan, too
(like a class handout) for markup, that might be pretty useful. Just my
opinion, though. I learned to type long ago in High School, and since the
advent of the PC (long after I left HS) my handwriting became illegible even
to myself!

Which Tablet PC is heavier than a similar laptop? If it is one of the newer
ones which include a CD/DVD bay, could be. But I'd take any of my
three-pound convertible (keyboard with screen rotation) over, for instance,
my wife's Sony Vaio which is about four pounds heavier.

Well there are times when typing is inconvenient at best. I can use my
Tablet to take notes, check e-mail and review documents while standing in an
elevator or walking around a client's site. Can't really do that with a
laptop too easily. :)

I looked at a Gateway at CompUSA and an HP. Both did have the CD drive in
them, which I would also want. they were thicker, as you might expect, but
also up there around 7.5 or more pounds. My current laptop is about 5
pounds. I certainly don't want to lug around some big thing. I was looking
at these as although I type nearly everything, I can see the utility of
marking up stuff with a pen and saving it. Not if it costs hundreds more and
weighs twice as much, though.

7.5? I don't know which HP you were looking at - the TC4200 is under 5 lbs.
I believe. My Acer C314XMi, which is really loaded, is a hefty 6.2 lbs.

Those are the larger ones now. The Motions, regular Toshiba M200s, TC1100
models, etc., are all under four pounds. If you want a wide screen (that's
what the Gateway M280 with the DVD drive is), then you've got a choice.
