large document interconnections

I’m using Word 2003 on a Windows XP environment. This is my first tie at
working with large documents and I am frustrated. My main document is 9.8 MB
or 2338 pages long.. It has four appendices: 132 MB, 4 MB, 1 KB and 120 KB.
Each is a separate file at this time.

I need to interconnect the main document with the appendices for navigation
between the elements of the document.

Can .doc solve my problems? How? Should I go to .html? What about size
and speed of access? Do I combine the five files? Is there a way to use
bookmards or some linking technique between files?

you can use the master document feature
"A master document contains links to a set of related subdocuments. Use a
master document to organize and maintain a long document by dividing it into
smaller, more manageable subdocuments." (Word Help)
Look up master document in word help for info on how to use it

Basically you can break your document into smaller files, by topics for
example, and work on each part separately.

"Master Document" is a term of art in Word referring to a "feature" that not
only doesn't work but also destroys documents. The consensus (with the
limited exception of Steve Hudson) among those offering advice on these
newsgroups is that using the Master Document feature is a good way to
destroy your document. It can destroy parts of your document that you are
not even working on! I think John McGhie said it succinctly when he said
that there are two kinds of Master Documents: Those that are corrupt and
those that will be corrupt soon. See

Wow I learned something. Didn't know that master documents were such an
issue. Why doesn't MS get rid of the feature or does it work better in 2002,
2003 versions of word?
