Large file locks/hangs on OS 9

I have a large file (80+ megs) with several graphics in it (the reason
for the large size). When I attempt to open the file on my PBG3 (OS
9.2.2) Word (2001) hangs a few seconds after opening the document.

I've tried adjusting my memory allocation (I have 384 megs. of RAM)
and turning on/off Virtual Memory. I've disabled all extensions, and
even removed Adobe ATM. No good.

I CAN open the document (with no problem) on an OSX (Word X) machines
with only 256 megs. of RAM.

Any ideas? Anyone else seen this problem?
