Large file size causes Word 2003 to Lock up

My file is very large - 528 MB with 142 photos. It has bogged down so I can't
delete even the first photo. Is there a way out of this predicament? Is
there some way to make an adjustment within Word that will allow me to start
deleting overly-large photo files?
