Large file

What may be the reason for a one page .one file with just a little
text in it to be >3MB in size? Could it be that some history is saved
in the file? Is there a way to optimize file size?

Have you ever had more content in that page?

I believe so, yes. Perhaps even images.

AFAIK OneNote comes with no option to compress it`s "database".
So if the file was large sometime, it won`t get any smaller.

Advise me if I am wrong...

Wow, this would be a big flaw! What's the rationale?

Thanks for the information.

It`s the same with Outlook files (PST):
If you do nothing, but receiving mails, and even "deleting" those, the file
will grow bigger and bigger.

OL provides a solution thou, which you have to trigger manually:
Rightclick on "Personal Folders" > Properties > Extra > Compress
(not sure if those are the acual labels in the EN version since I am using
DE).
Now the already invisible elements get removed from the Outlook file.

If you hear of a similar solution for ON post it here please ;-)

Have you tried Tools ->Options -> Save -> Optimize all files now?

Yep, that does the job. Thank you ;-)

One more question thou:
Why didn`t the field above (optimize after XX minutes of inactivity)
optimize my files before?
Now that I`ve used the button, my files are only 1/3 of the original size.
Or am I getting the inactivity-optimization thing wrong?

Thanks! :)

Perhaps you didn't have the files open? I have an increasing number
of .one files on my disk, many of them not open in OneNote all the
time. That's probably the reason why I stumbled upon the big file
problem.

PS: The Outlook "problem" is there with many email clients that store
emails in one file per folder. One popular file format is mbox.
Rearranging the file each time an email is deleted would be too
expensive, time wise. That's why emails are initially simply marked as
deleted, not removed.

It is my understanding that as you remove text, pictures, etc from a
notebook that the file size does not immediately decrease. But you can
optimize your database by going to tools then select options then click on
save and then select Optimize All Files Now. This should reduce the file
size.
