Large project files hang VBA when opening

VBA code in Access 2000 opens a project file (MSP 2000)
locally (or on a LAN) - but files over 1Mb cause the code
to hang.

Has anyone come across this and how did they overcome it?

Open the project file normally and then immediately select file, save. By
saving before doing anything else, Project does some house keeping on the
file. Is it still 1MB?

Try also saving to a .mpd file format then closing, opening from .mpd and
saving back to .mpp. If there was any corruption both of these methods may
resolve it.
