Large right margin in Normal view

Greg

After defragging the HD the other day, I'm getting an annoying
anomaly. When I open up an existing document, Word is defaulting to
Print Layout view. When I switch to Normal view, or if I open up a new
document (which is in Normal view), I'm getting a very large right
margin of blank space past the regular marins on the ruler. If I
scroll over, the scroll eventually ends, but the blank white space
extends right to the edge. The white space also extends to the bottom
edge, but not for as far. The text, headers, footers, etc, stay within
the correct bounds.
I've tried Detect and Repair, Repair from the Install CD, uninstalled
and re-installed Office 3 times, run up to date Norton Anti-Virus,
replaced Normal.dot on the machine with a copy from a good machine,
tried to fiddle with any settings that seemed remotely relevant, with
no luck.
I'm running Word 2000 on Windows 2000. I'm not positive the defrag had
anything to do with it, but I also lost my wireless connection on this
machine and had to unplug/plug the router and modem and go back in and
enable the connection to fix that. I also recently installed a new HP
photoprinter, but it had printed fine before. Now it will print, but
only after a delay of several minutes. Does anyone know what's going
on and how to fix it? Thanks.

I'm confused. You shouldn't be seeing headers or footers in Normal view (but
the white space to the right is normal).

I meant when I clicked on Headers & Footers, as if I was going to
insert them, the page displayed regularly, sorry.
I don't think the white space is supposed to extend way past the end
of the ruler. I keep the view set at 75%; normally I see the page &
text as if it was an actual sheet of paper sitting on a gray surface.
No gray surface now. If the ruler goes from 1 to 7, the blank white
space would go to about 70 on the ruler, if the ruler extended that
far, which it doesn't. It's all one giant sea of white space.

It sounds as if you are in Normal view. Have you tried switching to View |
Print Layout?

Yes, it shows regular size in Print Layout, but not in Normal view.
Not sure how this will display, but here's an ascii layout. *s denote
white space, &s gray space, (number)xx the ruler. 1 is incorrect, 2 is
what it's always been.
In 2, in Normal view, the scrollbar only scrolls to the end of the
gray. In 1, it eventually ends, but no gray. I've used Word for years
and never seen 1 before.
Thanks.

Do you perhaps have "Wrap to window" enabled (Tools | Options | View)?

Tried it with and without that. No difference. I did manage to make
the problem go away, but not sure at what cost. Found an article at
the mvps.org site in your signature, that while it didn't mention this
problem, worked to fix it. Don't have it handy, but it involved
editing the Registry key Data, or at least the toolbars value. I
renamed Data to Databak, and voila! problem gone. But I'm not sure
what new problem that might end up giving me.
