Last of Multiple Sections misbehaving

R

Robert Akin

I am using Word 2002 SP-2 to write a large document with
multiple chapters. I have Section (Next Page) Mark
between chapters except Word won't let me put a next page
section mark before the last chapter. It insists on it
being a Continuous mark. In addition, it does not let me
have a different header for the last chapter. If I edit
the header for the last chapter, it carries it backward
into the next to the last chapter as well. If I then edit
the next to the last chapter, the edits carry forward into
the last chapter.

If I delete the continuous mark and insert a next page
mark, it moves the continuous mark back to the beginning
of the next to the last chapter.

I read with interest the entry suggesting the use of
StyleRef in lieu of Section marks, but hope there is an
easier way. Please help.

I believe it is the default behavior of Word that a new
section is set to share its headers and footers with the
previous one, that is, to have the "Same as previous"
option turned on.

As for the StyleRef field, it enables you to include the
text (or numbering) of a heading in the header or footer
without using section breaks. You can combine it with
a "Page break before" setting for your top-level heading
style.

The "Same as Previous" option ALWAYS resets itself when a
section break (continuous or otherwise) is inserted.

Just something to watch for next time...
