latest Windows Update causing Microsoft Office products to hang

Steve R

I see there are a number of postings starting on 4-13 (see below) -
How can one let Microsoft know there was a major problem with the last
windows update - I see no options other than paying to email or call them???
apparently KB908531 messed things up. Where does Microsoft post information
about workarounds to this - especially how to do an uninstall on it????

Thanks
Steve R

copied and pasted from other postings on 4-13 and 4-14:

Suddenly Publisher 2003 won't save a file, any file. No error message but the
program hangs up. Also I can open a file from a link but not from the "open
file" icon. Reinstalling didn't help. I hardly ever use Excel, but
apparently it's happening there too. Virus protection is up to date.
Wordperfect works fine, it must be MS related. Help!
I'm getting the same thing. At first I thought it was my virus scanner, but
I've shut it down and still get the issues. Reboot, spyware scan, apply
latest patches, no lucvk. Anyone got a resolution for this?

Re: MS Windows Office 2003
When saving a document with "SAVE AS" the program does not respond.
This problem started after some "upgrades" were automatically installed
as the computer was being shut down.

I can open a file (exel, word) if I go through Microsoft Explorer. However, I
can't open a file from the program itself (word, excel).

Does anyone know the status of the KB908531 problem?

This was a security patch that MS released this past Tuesday (4/11), and
on many machines it is breaking both IE and all MS Office applications.
Removing the patch fixes the problem, but:

-It leaves the security hole that the patch fixed open
-If you have automatic update turned on, you keep getting "nagged" and
have a yellow splat in your system tray

When is a "fixed" KB908531 expected?

Users are reporting that uninstalling KB908531 solves the problem.
Microsoft is working on it.

Use the Control panel - Add/Remove programs, and be sure and check the
box "Show Updates"

You can uninstall the update in the control panel, Add or Remove Programs. After
it populates and opens, check "Show updates" at the top. I had problems with the
update as well. My seven year old computer did not skip a beat. Strange.

I am experiencing the problem with Word, Publisher, and Excel. I have a
small company and am desperate to correct the problem. How do I get a HUMAN
at Microsoft to talk to? I also do not feel I should have to pay for it
since Microsoft screwed it up to begin with!

I just unistalled the problem update and my computer is back to
normal...after several very long days! Thanks to this group for helping
me find my solution.

Has anyone heard any updates on this? I want to install the latest
updates but surely don't want to go through what I did the first time I
installed them.

Gainfully please. If I'm not employed soon I'm going to have to start
cleaning the house! ARGH! That would cut into my computer time!
