Latin extended-a-fonts in symbol of Word X?

Maurits

Hello, as I am working a lot in MS Word X nowadays and writing about
Slav people, I occasionally come across specific Slav fonts like c',
e.g. in Izetbegovic. In Word for Windows I can easily pick out the
specific font (latin extended-a-font) in symbol under menu lnsert.
Nevertheless, in Word for OSX I don't find those typical Slav fonts in
symbol.
Is someone familiar with this 'problem'? Maybe a file to download
somewhere?
(I think it's rather awkward. And okay, I can easily copy a word file
in windows and insert the needed Slav fonts. But, it's a sort of
principle and it's a long text...)
Thank you,
Maurits Netherlands

With luck someone will come along with a better answer, but I think what you
want is a font that includes Central European characters, I've seen
references to a "Times CE" font, and this link was posted as a reference the
last time a similar question was asked.

Using Google Groups to search this group for such terms may produce more
information on the necessary workarounds.

Although, if you want to experiment, you could also download the trial
version of Office 2004, which does support Unicode (Office X doesn't) and I
imagine it should have all the characters you need.

That's not necessary in Jaguar or Panther. They both include Central
European fonts. (It wasn't even necessary in OS 9 - you could just install
the Central European Language Kit from the OS 9 CD. You have to go back to
OS 8 to find a version where you had to pay for it.)

In Panther, go to System Preferences/International/Input Menu (Keyboard Menu
in 10.2) and check Czech (I liked saying that), Croatian (for Izetbegoviæ)
and any other of the many Central European languages marked under "Script"
column. In Jaguar, as I best recall, there was a separate "Script" pane
where you first had to check "Central European". In the Input menu pane also
click "Keyboard Viewer" (in 10.3 only) and "Character Palette".

If these languages are not available it means you didn't install all
languages with OS 10.3 (or 2). Go back and do a Custom Install of OS 10.3
(or 10.2) just to install the languages. You don't actually have to boot
from the Installer and possibly choose the wrong type of Install and wipe
your disk. You can just double-click "Additional Languages.mkpg". I seem to
recall it's on the 3rd disc - there may be some you specifically chose not
to install on the 2nd disk too, if you didn't do the default install.

Anyway, after checking the languages you want, you'll find a new menu on the
right side of your menu bar next to the clock, showing the flag of your
current OS language (US, if US English), Click it, and select "Show Keyboard
Viewer". You'll get the old KeyCaps. (In OS 10.2, find KeyCaps in
Applications/Utilities and launch it.)

Now select Croatian (or Czech, or Slovak, etc.) flag in the Input Menu.
Keyboard Viewer changes to Croatian and you can just type or click the "æ"
or "è" as I just did, or ¾ýø in Czech, etc. There will be font
substitution if you're in a standard font using one of the CE fonts, or you
can choose one to suit yourself. There are five CE fonts, plus a Silom and
Krungthep fonts which seem to do Central European too.

Alternately, you can use the Character Palette and insert characters form
the right Unicode block. That will work for most Central European characters
but there are a few characters in the Baltic language that use the macrom
which won't work in Word X. They will, however, in Word 2004 (see Latin
Extended and Latin Extended Additional groups in Character
Palette/Unicode/Unicode Blocks0.

Dayo and Paul, both your answers have helped me out with using CE
fonts in Word. Indeed the Hannover University has a testsite for these
fonts, and thanks to that site I also found out possibilities to use
the ?, š and ž in Word v.X. Thanks to Paul's instructions on using the
keyboard viewer I have been able to insert the above CE fonts. Thanks
a lot!
Groeten, Maurits.
