"Lay Out Shapes" option greyed out

It seems that no matter what mode I'm in, or what I have
selected or not selected, the Tools -> Lay Out Shapes
command is not available. Where can I find the setting to
turn it back on?

Hi David,

In Visio 2003, the Lay Out Shapes... command is enabled on the Shape menu
when have a drawing open. Selecting this menu item will open the Lay Out
Shapes dialog box, which lets you place shapes and route connectors between
shapes. What version of Visio are you using?

Dick,

Thanks for the response. I'm using Visio 2000. The
command is on the Tools menu for me. I can see it, but I
can't select it. I've checked when selecting nothing,
when selecting a shape, and when selecting a group of
shapes. Align, distribute, and connect shapes options are
all available to me.

I have a parallel thread in the "Creating Shapes" forum
that relates to an inability to create connectors that are
anything but straight. The two issues may be related, but
I don't know enough about the program to be able to tell.

I am running a corporate install of Visio 2000, and other
users generally do not have this problem. But I am not
totally alone. Others who have recently installed the
program (within the last couple months) have the same
problems I do (connectors, primarily), while older
installations do not have issues. Contact with our
company IT support resulted in no help, as they only
support the installation of software, not the actual use,
which I think (or at least thought) this was. If you can
give some hints for where IT could possibly look for the
root of the problem, that would be useful, too.

Thanks for your help.
