Hi,

I am writing up my MSc thesis and would like three different styles in the one document. I cannot find a way to do it and was hoping someone could advice please. I would like Word to allow me to create the following layout:

Title page; Abstract; Acknowledgements to have no page number; header and footer only on Abstract and Acknowledgements pages

Table of contents; Glossary; List of figures; List of tables to have page numbers on all (roman numerals); header and footer on all

Main body (introduction onwards) to have page numbers as normal; header and footer as normal

The page number is to be located in the footer.

I have looked at master pages but appear to be able to create only two masters and I need at least three.

Would welcome any advice!

Thanks.

Hi Simon,

Word doesn't use master pages, I don't think--I wonder what you mean
that you set up two masters? I don't understand how that concept could
apply to Word. The concept of "page styles" doesn't apply either.
Actually, Word doesn't really know what a page is:

[but you don't need to read that to solve your problem]

Anyhow, the basic approach is detailed here:
http://word.mvps.org/faqs/Formatting/NumberingFrontMatter.htm

Post back if you run into problems translating it to your document.

Daiya,

I've posted back to say thank you. I had tried this last night and had found that my use of sections would not work. By removing the page breaks and replacing with section breaks, all is well. Thank you ever so much!

Simon

PS
In Word 08 I have the option for publishing layout and within that there is the option to add a master page. Assume that I had completely the wrong end of the stick!

Glad you are sorted, happy to help.

Yes, there is. Because the MacBU coded some special features to get
around the fact that Word doesn't know what a page is, and I haven't yet
updated the article to acknowledge this (and I temporarily forgot it
existed, oops). But you aren't writing a MSc thesis in Publishing Layout
View, I hope. :)
