Layout changes with different printers

www.mvps.org/word/FAQs/Formatting/TextReflow.htm... "Becaus
e Word is a WYSIWYG application, it will always try to
represent on screen the result you will get if you print
on the printer that is selected as the default. Changing
printer drivers will almost always change the layout at
least slightly and sometimes radically."

Why should changing the printer driver make any
difference? The paper size and the page margins are still
the same, so why should layout change? Is it because the
printer has its own fonts that differ slightly from those
of other printers? If so, can I upload software fonts from
my PC to my printer to guarantee that changes will not
occur?

Although I wrote that article, this is an issue I don't fully understand,
but it's more than just a font issue (even if you download the fonts instead
of using the resident ones). Experimenting with the "Use printer metrics"
setting on the Compatibility tab of Tools | Options may prove useful. It is
my understanding that Word 2002 is less device-dependent than previous
versions, but all of this is beyond my comprehension. You might get a more
sensible answer in microsoft.public.word.printingfonts. The bottom line,
though, is that if you want a truly device-independent document, you need to
create a PDF.
