layout design - layout tables or layers?

Which is better and easier to use to layout a page, FP2003 layout tables and
cells or layers? If tables, use 1 table and fill with cells or use several
tables and fill with cells?

I use a mixture of tables, nested tables and layers. I do not use Layout
Tables.

Is there some problem with using Layout Tables or do you just feel more
comfortable with the other?

Layout tables produce illegal HTML (height attribute in the table tag), put
in lots of unnecessary comments, make it difficult to use % measurements and
reduce flexibility of design.
I occasionally use a layout table to sketch out the page, then remove all
the comments - converting it to an ordinary table, which, IMO, are much
easier to work with.

It looks like FP recommends using 1 layout table for the whole page, then
insert cells. Everything I read says that doing exactly that will affect the
search engines and also cause the page to load slower. I can't find where
you can set layers to a % in width instead of a pixel width. I do like the
flexibility of being able to put the layers anywhere on the page. Obviously
I'm new to FP and not sure which way to start. I have a rather large website
that I built with a program called Website Complete. There are several
things that it won't let me do with the design, the reason for switching to
FP. Any and all input will surely be appreciated.

I use tables and nested tables and do not have any problems with search engines or pages loading
slower.
