LDAP searches based on last name?

I've been able to connect our LDAP server to Entourage but I've noticed that
I need to provide the first name of a potential entry to get it to respond
with any candidates. When using Mail, I noticed that it found names using
either the first or last name. Is there a way to setup the LDAP server to
search on the last name first?
My settings currently are
Server: ldap.company.com
With search base options of, ou=employees, o=company.com
