Leap to Word 2004

I'd like to get Word 2004 but read that it's for users with
version 10.2.8 or above. With a recent downloaded upgrade,
I think I'm on 10.1.5. How can I bridge the gap to be ready
for 2004? Do I need to buy another product or are there
downloads I can get? A Microsoft tech support person had me
download 10.1.5, so I would assume that if higher upgrades
had been appropriate he would have told me about them.

Not sure, but you seem to be confusing Mac OS versions with Office versions.

You need to be running OS 10.2.8 or Panther in order to support Office 2004
or its components.

I believe Word 2004 will run as a standalone application, but you would
probably be happier and not that much more out of pocket if you sprang for
the full version of Office.

You do not need anything from Microsoft except Word 2004 or Office 2004.

You are entitled (I believe) to a special price on their software if you are
upgrading from a previous version of their software.

Best,

You might be confusing Mac OS X version numbers with Office v.X numbers.

Office 2004 probably wants to see Mac OS X 10.2.8

Office v.X never proceeded past 10.1.5 (Word 10.1.4 -- see my other
reply)

I'm hanging onto v.X for now, till I see how all the mess on Unicode
sorts itself out. Unicode was the only thing I really wanted out of all
the bloat, and it looks like it is far from compatible with older
documents containing strange characters and symbol fonts.

It is not yet clear to me where the 'fix' is likely to come from. There
*should* be a Mac-wide translation from Apple's funny eight-bit
extension characters to glorious 16-bit unicode. Yet I'm seeing so many
posts here of Spanish and Cyrillic Word docs going pearshaped and
right-to-left languages still not working. I think it is prudent to
wait for the first service release of 2004. They seem to have broken
more than they fixed.
