PC displays (especially notebooks) are moving towards widescreen formats
(just like our HDTVs). Since the Office Ribbon is fixed to the top of the
page, even more of the screen's vertical space has been taken away.
I recently purchased a new notebook PC. My criteria was that I needed a PC
with enough screen resolution that I could display a full page at 100% in
Word. I had to compromise at a full page displayed at 90% (with the ribbon
turned off). BUT... the smallest notebook display that would support this
resolution was an 18.4" behemoth. That's ridiculous.
Let me move my ribbon and menus to the side of my screen where there's
plenty of room.
