Level 2 numbering doesn't stay with Level 1 numbering

S

Simon

Sorry if the subject is not clear. I have a similar
problem to another user with regards to level 2 numbering
not following on from level 1. I'm using Word 2003 and
the problem happens on 2 different PC's

I have modified the default Heading 1 and Heading 2
styles to include numbering and outline numbering.
Problem I have is that when I create a document the
numbering looks as follows

1. heading 1
1.1 heading 2
1.2 heading 2
2. heading 1
1.3 heading 2

etc..

How the hell do I get it to say:
1. heading 1
1.1 heading 2
2. heading 1
2.1 heading 2

I've looked at all the options for modifying the
numbering within the style with no luck.

any help much appreciated

Thanks

Simon

If you have Word 2002 or 2003: show the styles pane; on the drop down arrow next to Heading 2, select "modify;" go to Format/Numbering/Outline Numbered; find or create the outline you need (but note Shauna Kelly's admonition, on her web site, to stick with a limited number of these optional patterns); click "customize;" on the left side click level "2;" on the right side click "more;" near the bottom click "restart numbering after 'level 1.'" Also link your styles to the outline levels in the same dialog box.

Earlier than Word 2002: I have no idea.

Friendly disclaimer: If someone tells you something different than what I have here, believe them. I mostly use Lotus Word Pro :)
