Level 4 numbering is restarting at 1.1.1.1, not 7.5.2.1 (etc.)

I am using Word 2003.
I'm having trouble setting up level 4 of my outline. I am using my own (not
default) heading styles.
Now I have:
7.5
7.5.1
1.1.1.1
The 4th entry should be
7.5.1.1
Other times I have tried to get this working, the numbering has shifted to
the left margin. Sometimes it even turns off all the outline numbering in the
whole document.

Dorothea:

I'll give you the most general of guidelines, and urge you to read Shauna
Kelly:

http://shaunakelly.com/word/numbering/OutlineNumbering.html

Edit only the numbering defined in your highest-level style. Say your
highest-level style is HeadOne. You'd edit the numbering for the WHOLE
structure ONLY by clicking Format > Style > HeadOne > Modify > Format >
Numbering > Outline Numbered, selecting the applied gallery (it has the
outline around it) then clicking Customize. Edit the numbering at various
levels by selecting it from the Level list.

In the customize Outline Numbered List, click the More button. Select the
fourth level and verify that the correct style is selected in the Link Level
to Style list.

Delete the entire content of the Number Format box, and rebuild it the way
you want it. Example: From the Previous Level Number list, select Level 1 to
insert the number from Level 1. Then type a period. Then select Level 2 from
the Previous Level Number list. Type a period, etc. Until the last number,
which you insert by selecting "1, 2, 3, ..." from the Number Style list.

Use this dialog to change the format and alignments for any and all levels
in your structure.

Bear--The link to Shauna Kelly did the trick. Thank you *very* much! I am
used to using FrameMaker, but am restricted to Word for this document.
I had spent hours trying to fix my numbering. I followed Shauna's
step-by-step fix. Viola! Your summary is just right: Remove all numbering,
create all numbering definitions from Heading 1. Most excellent relief!

Dorothea:

The correct way to express your experience is not

"I am used to using FrameMaker, but am restricted to Word for this document."

Rather, you should say

"I am used to being hobbled by FrameMaker, but have been given the freedom
to use Word for this document."

I'm glad I could help. ;-} Why not express your relief by rating the post as
having answered your question?

I see you suffer from my problem. I had to laugh at viola instead of voila!
Those fingers just won't follow the brain signals on the keyboard.
