Leveled project - resources still overallocated

J

Jeff M.

I have a project that showed overallocations for several
of my resources. I selected all tasks, went to
Project/Task Information/Advanced and selected "As Soon As
Possible" for the Constraint Type. I then leveled
resources and several tasks were affected. In addition,
my Finish date was pushed out by several weeks. However,
when I go back to look at my Resource Graph, although it
looks better I still see overallocations. Is there a way
to level so that all overallocations are removed?

Hi,

Sometimes, no. Project never edits the units for an assignment, so if you
have a maximum of 100% and you've assigned 101% then Project can't fix it.
There are also other examples where the problem can't be fixed.

Under Level resources, try levelling week by week and see if that does it.

hi Jeff

check the settings under Tools / Resource Levelling - Check for
overallocations on a **** basis - set it to "minute by minute". Also ensure
"level only within available slack" isn't ticked (doesn't sound like it is),
and leave the other two tick boxes (under this one) ticked - this allows
Project the maximum flexibility in resource levelling.

But, even then, Project can not level resources where you have allocated
more than you have on one task. For example, if you have Project Manager
assigned at 200% on one task, but have only an availablity of 100% - Project
can't fix that for you.

So, what i recommend, is once you have levelled on a minute by minute basis,
is to go in Resource Allocation view (filter to show overallocated resources
only) - with the Resource Management toolbar displayed and use the third
icon ("go to next overallocation") and see if you can determine why Project
didn't level the resource for you.

Cheers

Hi Rod
Thanks for your suggestions. Although this did not solve the problem. It caused me to identify a few other weaknesses in my plan and after a few adjustments in resources assigned, and a few adjustments in task dependencies I've now got a much tighter plan with no over allocations. Thanks!!
