Leveling Hangs

Project Server 2007: I have several medium sized projects in Project server
and am trying to level them but have hit a problem. Increasingly I am finding
that Project just stalls when attempting to level projects. Each time this
happens I have to close project, clear cache, force check in of prpojects,
reopen and try again, starting with the minimum leveling criteria and
gradually building up. Could it be that when the problem gets too hard a
timeout occurs between Porject2007 and Project Server? If so is there
anything I can do to work around the problem other that what I am already
doing?

Mike, do you have Service Pack 1 installed for Project Server and Project?
thanks

Hi Mark, thanks for replying so quickly

I believe we do have SP1 installed. We are also planning on implementing the
Jue Infrastructure Update but have'nt put it in yet.

I have since discovered that the hang trigger is attempting to level
day-by-day, I have had some success with week-by-week.

Hi Marc,

I have tried many different ways and can reproduce the problem whenever i
try to level day-by-day.

Leveling works when I open one or more project and set leveling to
Week-by-Week, changes to any of the other leveling setting also works.
Notably Leveling Week-by-week still takes about 5 mins to complete during
which the progress bar may not move and the "Calculating" update in the top
left may not flash for long periods. The only indication I have that progress
is being made is that in Task Manager where I see the CPU use vary between 50
and 52% for the task.

If I try to level day-by-day it does not find a solution. I left it running
overnight and found no progress made the next day, so after 10 mins I
generally give up and close Project, clear the cache, force check in and
start again week-by-week.

I have a new laptop T9500 2.6GHz with 3.5GB RAM

Any suggestions?

Thanks Gary, I'll try this.

I imagine that I should also untick the "Clear leveling values before
leveling" box each time to get the incremental benefit?

Hi Mike,

on that, you should clear this box, otherwise you cant level the resources
one at the time wihtout loosing the last leveling, which would defeet the
purpose of leveling by resource. By the way the books Gary mentioned are
excellent and describe a great methodology that I also use.
Hope this helps

Thanks Gary, I will purchase the book. Have had some success since I started
leveling one resource at a time. Eventually I can get to level day by day.
