Project Server 2003 w/ SP3

Hi, could anyone tell me why it would talk a project over 4min to level? We
tried again today and it was hung up for about 30min according to our PM. Any
ideas on what could cause this?

Jenn:

Some possibilities include hidden circular relationships and unresolved
scheduling conflicts, but to offer any guidance it would be helpful to know
more about the project metrics, number of tasks, assignments and resources
as well as the leveling approach you're taking. Our best practice
recommendation is to level one resource at a time. It sounds like you might
be turning Project's leveling tool loose on your project without any
guidance, and that may lead to bigger disappointments that the wait time
you're experiencing.

The project has 1151 tasks in it. 60 resources total and 21 over allocated
resouces. The project manager selected approximately 100 tasks in the plan
that have not been published to the resources, used the tools menu to level.
options choosen: week by week under leveling calculations, leveling order =
priority standard, leveling can adjust... and leveling can create... were
both checked under resolving overallocations.

When the leveling starts, the windows task manager shows 100%
utilization on the performance tab and winproj.exe at 99 CPU on the processes
tab. It takes 4 minutes and 30 seconds to level the resources for the 100
tasks. I leveled another project with about the same number of tasks in it
and the utlization was at no more than 13% and took about 5 seconds

Thanks
