License for Churches

I was told that if I use PowerPoint to project slideshows for church services
that it's not sufficient to just go to the store, buy a copy of PowerPoint
(thereby acquiring a license to use the product), but that the church would
have to purchase the software from an authorized reseller that sells to a
501c3 non-profit and also pay something like $10/month just to legally use
PowerPoint in front of an audience. Is there any truth to that? It sounds a
little weird that someone can't just buy a copy off the shelf and have the
license to use it, but that they have to pay each month too?

Not true, you buy a copy and use it on one machine. PowerPoint is meant to
be used to give public presentations.

I am not a lawyer (or Microsoft employee), but I am fairly sure that
Austin is right. However, what you might be hearing has to do with the
content that you are projecting, not PowerPoint itself. If you project
copyrighted material, you might need permission and/or fees to the
copyright holder (e.g., if you want to show movies in your church, you
can't just rent them and show them; you a need a fairly inexpensive--for
non-profit screening--license to show films). But this has nothing to do
with PowerPoint itself.

Someone is pulling your leg. There are no monthly fees for PowerPoint -
period.

There are places (usually a list of them is at the church's central or
regional office) that offer discounted versions of the software for
non-profits.

However, having said all that, there are other software packages that are
marketed towards churches. Most of these are also single time fees, but
have monthly graphic file downloads for a fee.
