Licensing Project Server 2007

I'm confused about what server licences are required for Project Server 2007.
User/CAL licensing I understand, but the server licensing I'm not sure about.

If I install PS2007 onto a 2 server configuration (WFE/App and DB), I need
one PS2007 server licence. That's OK.

If I add a separate WFE server, do I need to add another PS2007 server
licence? The Project Server application will not change where it runs. I
think I might need an additional licence.

If I then choose to add an additional WFE/App server to the farm that is
intended to provide resources for a separate application altogether, do I
need another PS2007 licence? I can't stop that new WFE server providing
access to PWA, so I think I need a new licence but that would also mean that
every time you add a WFE to a MOSS farm that has PS2007 installed you will
need to pay for an additional PS2007 licence. Is that really the case?

You're correct. You need a Project Server license for each WFE. This is
one of the (several) reasons why you would typically not install Project
Server in the same farm as your main MOSS intranet.

The other issue you would need to be concerned about is that the Project
Server update cycle is typically more accelerated than a MOSS update cycle.

Gary Chefetz had a good blog post on this about a year ago or so. Can't
find it now, but I am sure you could hunt it down. A bit more recently,
Boris Bazant posted a white paper on SharePoint and Project Server coexistence.
That may address some of your questions.

Thanks, Andrew, although that is not good news. This is about the potential
access rather than the actual usage, I think. Do you know if you direct the
traffic to only one WFE for PS2007 if that would mean you only need to pay
for one licence?

You mean use one farm but dedicate one WFE to MOPS? That's not feasible.
MOPS will have to be installed on all of the WFE's. Your best bet is to
create a separate MOSS or WSS farm for MOPS with a single WFE (or sized to
your needs), then leverage the services off of your existing MOSS farm.
