I recently purchased a copy of both Office:mac 2004 and Virtual PC 7
for mac from an online auction.they can with all documentation, COA
and licensing keys. can i legally install this software? i do not know
if the original owner has removed this application, and have no way to
verify.heck, i'm not sure it was ever installed. if this is ok to
install, is there anything i can do to Re-register product keys with
MS so that i can be shown as the legitimate owner with MS ?

Go ahead and install. It is the seller's responsibility to ensure that
he/she removed Office before transferring the license to you.

Don't bother registering unless you want the monthly email from the MS
Mac Business Unit (MacBU). MS doesn't keep track of legitimate (or, I
presume, illegitimate) owners.

I have a different licensing question -- I recently got an iMac,
installed MS Office for Mac 2004. I was sure to uninstall the test
drive version, after reading about problems it causes not to do so.
I followed the instructions to uninstall, emptied the trash after, did
the installation, updates, etc. But when I look at the "about"
section of word, etc, it shows that the product is licensed to "Office
2004 Test Drive User". I did fill out the info on name, address,
etc, and the "test version" watermarks that I was seeing on excel
spreadsheets pre-installation are gone now. Do I need to register
each application? Did I miss something in the uninstall? Or is all
OK, since the excel spreadsheets don't show test version anymore, and
I am able to print now.

You can try re-entering your name & CD key that was provided when you bought
Office 2004. Go to /Applications/Microsoft Office 2004/Additional
Tools/Remove Office/, and launch "Remove Office". When it has loaded, hold
down the Option key, and click the "Remove Licensing Information Only"
button. Then re-enter your name and CD key.

Thanks, I'll give it a try. We actually have another, more
substantial issue. Shortly after we got the iMac, and before we
installed the Office 2004, we upgraded our internet connection from
Earthlink dial-up to Earthlink DSL. We've been having problems with
the connection ever since doing the Office install (it worked fine
before, from all 3 of our accounts). First, we couldn't access the
internet from the accounts other than the one from which I installed
Office. There are 3 accounts, one for my husband, myself, and our
daughter. I installed it from my husband's account. All 3 accounts
have admin rights, and all 3 have the auto open at login of Earthlink
(a fix suggested at Apples iMac support forum). Yesterday, we lost
all connection through Earthlink, my husband has contacted them, they
think it might be a server/phone line problem (after having him change
a bunch of stuff, settings). I actually think something might have
gotten knocked out of place when doing the install of Office, but
don't know enough to figure out what it is. I'm not sure if it's an
Earthlink issue, Office issue, or iMac issue. I just bought the
extended warranty, applecare plan for the iMac from Amazon a couple of
days ago, if the Earthlink people don't figure it out, we'll give
Apple support a call. (it should be arriving today or tomorrow)

Might it have something to do with MS Messenger or Entourage? I
didn't do the setup for those after Office installed, we don't use
them. I just installed everything, thinking at some point we
might. But now I'm thinking one of those apps might have something
to do with it.

My bet is it was an Earthlink issue. Where are you? There was an extended
outtage in the San Jose area on Monday/Tuesday...

Cheers

And Earthlink is notorious for connection issues, among a whole lot of
other things.

I'm in San Diego, maybe the San Jose problem did affect us.
Hopefully it'll get straightened out tomorrow. I wanted to stay with
Earthlink, they were fine for the dial-up, and thought it would be
good to keep our same email address. I'd always heard good things
re. service, support with them, in addition to not having problems
with them previously.
