Ligatures - how to turn off

Processor: Intel

I have a following problem: When I type certain pairs of characters, they turn out into ligatures, which are undesirable. For example, I often have part numbers in my Excel documents, which consist of a number (xxx) followed by "PL", and the by slash and another character. Here is an example "MB133PL/A". Excel, Entourage and Word change the pair characters "L/" into a Polish letter L with slash, which doesn't make sense. Similarly "o" followed by slash is changed into norwegian "o" crossed with slash. How can I turn off this feature?

I would also love to see if someone could post a solution for this problem.

Ligatures causing me a lot of trouble in Excel 2008 and I've found no way to turn it off.

Cheers,

Jan

Derek & Jan -

Sorry, but the issue you describe is *not* a matter of "ligatures". A
ligature is when 2 (sometimes more) specifically defined characters in a
font occur adjacent to one another & are then "tied together" such as the
letters fl, fff, ae & any number of others. What you're encountering is
completely different [foreign] characters replacing what you type.

In order to rectify the problem you'll need to look closely at your Language
version of the software, Language setting of your systems, aspects of your
keyboards as well as OS X Keyboard Input method settings. One or more of
those concerns is out of sync.

Hi Bob,

ok this was my fault, because I have indeed a problem with ligatures. I want to turn them off in Excel 2008. This is standard procedure in every other application where I can use the fonts panel to disable the feature of ligatures in typography settings. But in Excel I haven't found a way.

Could you please provide a hint how to turn off ligatures in Excel 2008?

Thanks,

Jan

Hi Jan -

You're right - at least AFAIK there is no such setting in Excel. However, it
appears that ligatures are determined by the font being used. I have no idea
what to suggest other than to use a different font.
