Ligatures letters

Maureen

I use Word 2000 and would like it to automatically change ae to a ligature
(e.g., aesthetics, curriculum vitae, etc.). I've tried inserting it into
AutoCorrect but it doesn't work. If memory serves, it used to be available.
Any ideas?

Thanks

Might be better answered in a Word newsgroup. I typed aesthetics, selected
the ae and used Format|Font; on Character Spacing tab I changed the Spacing
to Condensed 2pts. Expect this could be made an autocorrect.
best wishes

Select diacritics or ligated characters

The feature or some of the options described in this Help topic are
only available if support for right-to-left (right-to-left: Refers to
keyboard settings, document views, user interface objects, and the direction
in which text is displayed. Arabic and Hebrew are right-to-left languages.)
languages is enabled through Microsoft Office Language Settings.

1.. In your file, click to the left of the character whose diacritic
(diacritics: Markings that are printed above, below, or next to a character
that indicate how to pronounce it.) or ligation you want to select.
2.. Hold down the SHIFT key, and then press the RIGHT ARROW or LEFT
ARROW key once for each diacritic or ligation.

I thought I'd seen it somewhere!! The ae ligature *is* available
in the Univers font tho' I don't know how well it will harmonize
with your current font. Strangely enough, the oe ligature is
available in a lot more fonts but I suspect it may be useful in
Polish or Turkish (just a guess!)

I did a few experiments just now to see if there were fonts
other than Univers with the ae ligature, I find that is
available in Arial with the 00e6 for lower case and 00c6 for
capitals using the ALT-X method, i.e. type 00c6 then ALT-x. I
am using Office XP, in other words Word 2002. I have not done an
exhaustive search nor will I but it might be easier to choose a
suitable font than I had thought and also to set up an
autocorrect.
