Limit on number of STS subwebs in project server 2002

In our instance of Project Server 2002, we have around 350 projects with
subwebs. For each of these subwebs, 5 security groups are created. Recently
we have been seeing that the IIS service stops. Restarting it does not work.
Hoever when we cleanup security groups related to some obsolete projects it
restarts the IIS Windows service and the project server runs fine.

We found a KB article (838677) that says that it is an inherent OS problem
that denies you connection to PS 2002 if your user account is a member of
more than 1024 groups on the server. This would mean that the maximum
projects with subwebs that you can have in PS 2002 is 1024. In reality even
less if user with administrator priviliges own/belong to some plans then it
would bring that number down even more.

Is there some kind of maintenance that is advised for sharepoint (STS) for
PS 2002. STS has become a real tough applicaton to maintain on our end.

Any help/suggestions is appreciated.

Thanks,
Imttiaz

Sadly, the fix for this is to add another STS machine to your system so
that the other projects can have their subwebs on that new machine.

This was fixed in 2003 since STS became windows Sharepoint Services
(WSS) and it handles security and just about everything else
differently than it did in STS.

Sorry.
