Limitation managing categories for multiple contacts

Is anyone aware of a known limitation to the number of contacts you can
select at one time while managing categories ?

It seems as though as soon as more than 100 contacts are selected and you
then attempt to manage the categories for those selected contacts all
categories are selected or checked regardless of whether or not any contact
belongs to the category.

As soon as you adjust the selection to less than 100, only the appropriate
categories for the selected contacts are highlighted/checked.

Has anyone else experienced this limitation or figured out a workaround.
