limiting search form results

N

neill

I am using FP 98 and the basic search form. I want to be
able to limit search results. In have put files that I
don't want to be accessed into a hidden folder. So now,
the pages are inaccessible, but search results will still
return that page link. The link is useless to the user

How do I limit the RESULTS so that users are not
confronted with a bunch of deadend results that will only
return an "error" page anyway?

Surely there should be a way to NOT have a result returned
if the page that contains that text is a given folder
location. I suspect I have to change the "Word list to
search" parameters from "All" to something else, but I do
not use or have discussion groups!

Sincerely,
Neill

Try putting the "hidden" in your _private folder.

If that doesn't do it, put them in a a different subweb
that's not a child of the web you want to search.

Jim:

First of all, FP has visually hidden the folder called
_off limts (the folder containing the files that should be
inaccessible) and secondly, when I use Exploring to try to
physically move the files into the _private folder, it
simply will not allow movement of the files!

Most frustrating!

Thanks Stefan:

Sorry for long pause in response (vacation).

I have done as you said. Renamed and recalulated
hyperlinks. The files that are not to be made available
are in the _private/_off_limits folder and no other copies
exist.

The problem is still this:

a search term still brings up results for files that are
now in the _private/_off_limits folder but I noticed that
the results are referencing the OLD location for the file
before it was moved into a secure folder!

It's as if the search form will not relenquish the old
file locations/paths! Of course, when you click on the
seradh results links, it brings up my custom error page
because the file is not where the search resluts page
thinks it is.

How do I get the search form results page
(http://www.hoggandmythen.com/_vti_bin/shtml.exe/search.htm
) to stop referencing irrelvant pages?

Help,
Neill

To see _hidden folders in FP use Tools Web Settings Advanced - show hidden folders

PS
Never name any of your files / folders w/ spaces
("_off limits" should be renamed to say "_off_limits")

And do not use Explorer to move any files in a FP web
- if you have open the web and run Tools Web Settings
Advanced - Delete Files and then Tools Recalculate
Hyperlinks

If you're using the FrontPage "WAIS" search engine, recalculate
hyperlinks.

If you're using Microsoft Indexing Service, the server administrator
may need to kick off a new scan.
