limiting subform amount to amount of main form

i have one field in my main form called "expense limit" which holds the
maximum amount that can be paid against expenses of a patient. in my subform
i am totalling all records in one box. so i want the system to prompt me when
i enter the transaction that makes the total amount of subform to exceed the
"expense limit" entered in the main form.
is this possible.
