Line breaks

Version: 2008
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
Processor: Intel

I'm finding that in many -- but not all -- text boxes with text running more than a line, the lines don't line up. Instead, the space prior to the first word in the second line appears, creating an indent that I don't want.

Also occurs sometimes in bulleted lists with hanging indent.

Is this a bug in the new version of PPT for Macs? Never encountered it before.

Hi Dave -

This is something that a number of people have been reporting, but I gotta
tell ya... I've turned PPt inside & out with every off-the-wall font I have,
in text boxes, bulleted list placeholders, etc. & haven't been able to force
it to occur. Left margin stays sharp as a razor's edge no matter what I do
in old files, new files, converted files - makes no difference.

The only thing I've been able to reproduce is in a Bulleted List placeholder
where the Bullet formatting hadn't been properly removed. That resulted in
an expected residual Hanging Indent which was easily resolved through
Format> Paragraph as well as removing it on the Ruler.

I'm going to pass it on to MacBU. As soon as someone has the chance I
imagine they'll take a peek in here & ask for some files to be forwarded so
they can evaluate. Last I checked, though, hey hadn't been able to repro the
problem themselves - at least since the 12.1.0 SP1 came out. It addressed
font issues which were universal to Office in OS X.

Other than that I don't know what to tell you other than keep checking back.

I've placed a file online that has the bad indents. Please test it on
your system to verify that you see bad indents on the second line of
every paragraph. I only see the indents using PPT 2008 12.1 or
greater. I only see the bad indents on files NOT created in PPT 2008
or PC PPT 2007.

For me the problem started when I upgraded PPT 2008 from v12.0 to
v12.1. I have tested on PPC and Intel Macs. 10.4 through 10.5.4, and
the problem stays. I can even copy and paste the text with bad indents
into a new PPT 12.1 file and the bad indents remain even with a
paragraph with good indents above it!

Some people ask, why not downgrade to 12 again to solve your problem.
Well, I can't since that upgrade also upgraded my Entourage Database
file. That file is now incompatible with v12.0 so I must use at least
v12.1 of Entourage.

What I have been doing is using my PPT v2004.

My whole office is experiencing this problem. As we are half Mac and half PC it's a big issue.
I have just done an experiment where I opened a Powerpoint file in Keynote where the problem disappears. I then exported back to Powerpoint and reopened it. The mysterious indenting is gone. Don't mistake this for a workaround, but it is interesting.

Any response? This has been a problem for me as well, and a client
relationship was severely damaged because of it. I know it sounds silly, but
even pointing out it is known issue in the software doesn't make their
inexperienced users' presentations look right when they use the template we
created.

Please help, Microsoft!

You're pleading in the wrong court - This is a peer-to-peer newsgroup. Those
here are users just like yourself, so there's little likelihood that anyone
from MS will ever see your plea.

If you want the issue addressed more promptly use Help> Send Feedback to
register & reinforce the point in the databank they *do* review. The more
demand they receive there the more attention the matter is likely to
receive. Just because you don't get a personal reply doesn't mean that your
voice isn't heard, but here you're just shouting into a deep hole.

Thanks for letting me know. Something about the post on this thread made me

I've seen "CyberTaz" on other discussion forums attempting to put out
the fires that PPT 2008 is causing in a Mac community. He's a mole.

Excuse me? Exactly what is that supposed to mean?

Please either back that up or back off.
