Line formatting with a mind of its own

I typed a title and then a solid line across the page, after return the line
went black when I want it to be purple and now I can't delete the black line.
How can I delete this line and keep the purple one I want?
Actually I am redrafting someone elses document and there is a line in the
footer I would also like to remove
