Line Number count in Normal view doesn't work

We are having a problem with Word 2004. In the Normal view the Line
number ( Ln ) at the bottom of the page does not show anything. If we
switch to the Page Layout view the number appears. Anyone have a
suggestion? We have checked for updates and our version is current.

Try checking "background repagination" in Word | Preferences | General.
That works here.

However, note that such information in Normal view is pretty much just an
estimate and ought not be closely depended on. Normal view is not designed
to give totally accurate information about what a doc will look like when
printed, which is why you need to specifically tell it to track the
pagination by checking that box. Where a line breaks is part of the
pagination, and linked to the printer.
