Line numbering and numbering in text - issues

I would like to create a situation where I number a line and then refer to the line number in a text, like this:

1. blah blah blah

And as we see in the previous examples, as in (1), the answer is good.

I want the line number and numbers in text to be linked, so that if I delete or add more line numbers, the linked number in the text automatically adjusts.

I'm working with a lot of line numbers I need to reference in text.

Any ideas how to do this??

Assuming that this is a document which periodically breaks for examples:

Example 1

blah blah [paragraphs worth] blah blah

Example 2

blah blah [paragraphs worth] blah blah

Then you want to use the Insert | Caption feature to number the
examples, and they will automatically be listed in Insert |
Cross-Reference to let you refer back to them, and Word will handle
numbering, linking, and renumbering. The only caveat is that you have to
select all and update fields to make sure the cross-references are
updated (you can set Word to do this automatically on Print and Open).
See if that basic principle works for you--details can be customized if
necessary.

If you need to number every line of text, say so, that's a different issue.
