Line Numbers and Tables

I'm attempting to create a document that will have both paragraph text
and several tables containing text. Is there anyway around Word's
stated inability to number the lines in tables as well?

The problem is that tables are treated as objects, not as lines of
text.

The only workaround I've found is to use tabbed text with borders
(Format>Borders & Shading). This doesn't give you the vertical cell
walls, but you can draw them in with the line tool if you want.
